Veterinarians

Our team consists of our Veterinarians, our licensed Veterinary Technicians, our Client Service Representatives, and our Veterinary Assistants. Each member of the team performs an important part of the care and communication within our hospital and with you, our clients.

Dr. John Crowell

Dr. Crowell started working at our practice in 1960 as a young student. At that time, his job was to clean kennels and walk dogs.  Though he worked in human hospitals and worked summers on a Standardbred breeding farm, he always returned to veterinary medicine.  In 1972, he moved to Iowa and worked in the Iowa State Veterinary Hospital as an x-ray technician while attending Vet school.  Dr. Crowell joined the practice as a veterinarian in 1979. He was born in Endicott and raised in Vestal, graduating from Vestal High School in 1968.

He attended the University of Rochester and Eisenhower College and received his D.V.M. from Iowa State University in 1979, a member of the Centennial graduating class.  He is an active member of the New York State Veterinary Medical Society (NYSVMS), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Veterinary Dental Society (AMDS), a hospital director of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and a charter member of the Eastern States Veterinary Association.  He lives with his wife Mary Jo, and their 2 dogs, "Otis" & "Jude".  Dr. Crowell loves to sail his Catalina 30 during the summer; and in the winter is an enthusiastic skier, having skied a glacier in Austria and in the Swiss Alps. He and his wife built a cabin in the Endless Mountains and have taken up snowshoeing with "Otis".

Dr. Diane Wittner

Dr. Wittner joined the practice in 1996.  She is a 1986 graduate of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University and received her B.S. with Distinction from Cornell University (1976) in Neurobiology and Behavior. She was a member of the Vestal High School Class of 1972.

Deciding between a career in biological sciences or veterinary medicine, Dr. Wittner used her background of expertise with research animals to pursue additional veterinary training in avians (birds) and exotics (rabbits, ferrets, mice, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, etc.). She utilizes membership in organizations like the AVMA, the NYSVMS, the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), the Mid-Atlantic States Association of Avian Veterinarians (MASAAV), and the Greater Syracuse Veterinary Medicine Academy (GSVMA) to continue training and upgrade/update her skills, techniques and knowledge.  Dr. Wittner and her husband, Fred, currently keep pet birds of their own and trained and showed in obedience with their two Doberman Pinschers, "Raven" & "Pippin".  When time permits, she enjoys golfing and scuba diving in tropical waters.

Alain Giroux, DVM, MSc, DACVR

Dr. Giroux is a board-certified specialist in Radiology and Ultrasonography. Working out of Colonial Veterinary Hospital in Ithaca, NY, as home base, he takes his ultrasound equipment to the Greater Binghamton area each week to perform examinations requested by local referring veterinarians. Originally from Quebec, Canada, he received his DVM from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal in 1995. He completed his residency in Radiology and Ultrasonography at the University of Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. Since then he has been consulting on radiographic, ultrasound, and MRI studies, as well as performing studies himself. He has been actively teaching veterinarians at regional and national meetings and locally at training seminars. In his spare time, he plays ice hockey and entertains his two young children.

Patricia Carcamo, DVM

Dr. Carcamo joined the practice in April 2008. A graduate of Cornell University in May 2001, she went on to veterinary school at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in May 2006. Prior to veterinary school, Patty was a licensed veterinary technician and had worked in small animal practices and also with wildlife and their rehabilitation. As a veterinarian, she was

working in the Ithaca area before joining STVA. Her interests include dogs, cats, wildlife, and pocket pets and particularly surgical treatments. She participates in pet visitation programs for nursing homes and hospitals; she has also donated her time to a low-income pet care clinic. Memberships in AVMA and Central New York Academy of Continuing Education and attending national and regional education seminars, including the 2007 AVMA Annual Convention, are continuing to improve her knowledge base. When Patty is not working, she enjoys cooking, photography (especially black and white), swimming, and maintaining her fluency in Spanish.
